Scientific Background: MEK5 (MAP2K5) is a Dual specificity protein kinase of the STE group and STE7 family. It is activated by phosphorylation on Ser/Thr by MAP kinase kinase kinases. Activation of this pathway appear to play a critical role in protecting cells from stress-induced apopotosis, neuronal survival and cardiac development and angiogenesis by acting as a scaffold protein for the construction of a complex consisting of MAP3K2 or MAP3K3 and MAP3K5 and MAPK7.
