Scientific Background: Fused (STK36) is a protein-serine/threonine kinase of the Other group and ULK family. It functions in the sonic hedgehog (Shh) signalling pathway. Fused regulates the activity of the transcription factors GLI1, GLI2, and GLI3 by opposing SUFU activity and stimulating nuclear translocation of the factors. Fused is also necessary for the assembly of the central pair apparatus in motile cilia. In addition, Fused activity is necessary for post-natal development, potential through its role in ciliary function or regulation of cerebral spinal fluid homeostasis.
