Scientific Background: Alpha-Tubulin (Tubulin alpha-1B chain; TUBA1B) is a cytoskeletal protein that belongs to the tubulin family. Tubulin is the major constituent of microtubules, protein filaments consisting of alpha- and beta-tubulin heterodimers. It binds two moles of GTP, one at an exchangeable site on the beta chain and one at a non-exchangeable site on the alpha chain. Microtubules grow by the addition of GTP-tubulin dimers to the microtubule end, where a stabilizing cap forms. Below the cap, tubulin dimers are in GDP-bound state, owing to GTPase activity of alpha-tubulin. It facilitates critical processes including cell shape maintenance, intracellular transport, and mitosis. TUBA1B is localized within the microtubule and cilia. As a key component of the cytoskeleton, it is frequently used as a, often, stable "housekeeping" control. However, it is highly expressed in rapidly dividing cells, such as those found in cancerous tumours, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), lung adenocarcinoma, and Wilms' tumour.
