Scientific Background: Rab1B (Ras-related protein Rab-1B) is a small GTPase that belongs to the small GTPase superfamily, Rab family. Rab proteins are key regulators of intracellular membrane trafficking, from the formation of transport vesicles to their fusion with membranes. Rab proteins cycle between inactive GDP-bound forms and an active GTP-bound forms that are able to recruit to membranes different set of downstream effectors directly responsible for vesicle formation, movement, tethering and fusion. Rab1 functions in the initial events of the autophagic vacuole development that take place at specialized regions of the endoplasmic reticulum and proceeds through successive Golgi compartments. It is required to modulate the compacted morphology of the Golgi. The GTP bound to Rab proteins undergoes degradation through the intrinsic GTPase activity of Rab proteins.
