Scientific Background: VAChT is a 75 kDa member of the vesicular amine transporter (VMAT) family. The encoded transmembrane protein transports acetylcholine into secretory vesicle for release into the extracellular space. Acetylcholine (Ach) transport utilizes a proton gradient established by a vacuolar ATPase. It acts as an antiporter, swapping vesicle protons (H+) for acetylcholine, which is crucial for cholinergic transmission and neuroregulation. It is expressed in cholinergic neurons and specialized non-neuronal cells (e.g., airway epithelia). The VAChT gene is uniquely "nested" within the first intron of the choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) gene. This description may include information annotated by UniProt and/or Google AI.
