Scientific Background: GABARAP (Gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor-associated protein) is a 14 kDa adaptor/scaffold protein that belongs to the ATG8 family. It binds to the g2 subunit of GABA(A) receptors and anchors them to microtubules, facilitating inhibitory synaptic neurotransmission. It functions as a ubiquitin-like modifier with a role in intracellular transport of GABA(A) receptors and its interaction with cytoskeletal proteins such as tubulin and gephyrin. It is a ubiquitin-like modifier of the ATG8 family involved in intracellular membrane trafficking and autophagy. It is involved in apoptosis and in autophagy. Whereas LC3s are involved in elongation of the phagophore membrane, the GABARAP/GATE-16 subfamily is essential for a later stage in autophagosome maturation. It features an N-terminal subdomain with helices and a ubiquitin-like fold, involved in autophagy and membrane fusion. It is expressed in heart, brain, placenta, liver, skeletal muscle, kidney and pancreas. This description may include information annotated by UniProt and/or Google AI.
