Scientific Background: ATG2A (Autophagy-related protein 2 homolog A) is a phosphatidylinositol-3-phosphate binding protein in the ATG2 family. It is a rod-shaped lipid transfer protein (LTP) essential for autophagy, acting as a bridge to transfer phospholipids (such as PC, PE, and PI) from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to the expanding isolation membrane (phagophore). Its large, rod-like structure (approx. 20 nm) has a hydrophobic cavity, which allows it to transport lipids. It is involved in autophagosome assembly, regulating the size of nascent autophagosomes, and regulating lipid droplets morphology and distribution within cells. Without ATG2A, autophagosome formation is blocked. ATG2 is involved in mitophagy (the selective degradation of mitochondria). Deficiency can lead to the accumulation of abnormal, elongated mitochondria and impaired cellular function.
