Scientific Background: CaMK1d is a protein-serine/threonine kinase of the CaMK group and CaMK1 family. It is activated by Ca2+/calmodulin. The binding of calmodulin is thought to result in a conformational change and can lead to subsequent activation through phosphorylation by CaMKK1 and CaMKK2. At least in part, it can also be activated by CaMKK1 in a calcium-independent manner. It is associated with calcium-triggered CaMKK-CaMK1 signalling cascade and activates CREB- and CREM-BETA-dependent gene transcription. A K52A mutation leads to a loss of phosphotransferase function.
